St. George's for Young People

Sunday school is an integral part of St George’s, and we welcome children from 3 or 4 years up until around confirmation age. The teachers are all enthusiastic members of the congregation who want to share in the children’s faith journey. We follow the school calendar, and so are not active during the holiday periods.

For children below Sunday school age, a Crèche is available in the library just off the side chapel, offering a range of toys and books and run by volunteers. If you would like to use the crèche for your child, then we suggest you drop them off just before the service and pick them up in time for the communion for a blessing, or at the end of the service. We do ask that children are collected no later than 11.50am.

For young people beyond Sunday school age (young teenagers), ‘The Group’ regularly meets for discussions in the hall upstairs at 10.30am on two Sundays a month.

For the most part, Sunday school follows the Sunday readings used in church as the basis of teaching so that your children can share these themes with you each week, while ‘The Group’ follows a separate course on the foundations of faith.

Monthly we use a type of spiritual formation called “Godly Play” with our young people, and we hope that this combination of story-telling, wondering, and work will draw them deeper into a knowledge and love of God.

In order to help with the smooth running of both Sunday school and Crèche, we would ask you to ensure your children arrive by 10.25 so that we can start promptly at 10.30 am. This applies particularly to the days when we use “Godly Play” in Sunday school so as not to disrupt the flow of the story-telling.
We are also very keen for the Sunday school to share in the Parish Eucharist and the children participate fully in a number of services throughout the year, as well as being brought into the church to be blessed at the Eucharist each Sunday.
We also hold a party in the parish hall on one of the Saturdays before Christmas.

We are always delighted to welcome new teachers for Sunday school or volunteers for assisting with the Crèche, and if you would like to consider offering your talents and sharing your faith with children, please speak to one of us for more information. All teaching material is provided so you won’t be left high and dry, and all current teachers will be happy to give assistance and advice, as will Frs. David and Bernard.

Our Church Council is committed to a responsible care of children here and we have a Child Protection Policy agreed by the Diocese under the Children’s Act. We have a dedicated Child Protection Officer, Julia Campbell.

We look forward to seeing you and your children on as many Sundays as possible, so please feel free to get in touch with us.
